About the project
The customer contacted us to explore options for refurbishing containers that are exposed to the elements in Risavika, Tananger. The aim was to assess their condition and consider how to restore them to good condition after many years in a corrosive coastal environment near Stavanger. Additionally, there was a request to replace the entrance door on one of the containers.
Since this involves cutting and welding, we found it sensible to bring in a partner for the mechanical work.
After an inspection and review with the customer and our partner, we proposed a solution involving tent coverage, sandblasting, and a full paint system.
Scope of Work
StS-ISONOR handled all planning and preparation of a complete job package, including the mechanical work carried out by the partner, and coordinated the job on site.
This involved liaising with the customer and preparing covering and masking before the partner performed their work.
We then carried out a full washdown to remove dirt and salts, sandblasting down to bare steel at corrosion points, and a complete sweep-blast of the remaining surface to remove old paint and ensure proper adhesion for the new coating system.
Challenges and Results
During the site inspection, a lack of power outlets for welding was discovered, which meant we had to bring in a diesel generator to carry out the project.
In projects, where possible, STS-ISONOR strives to utilise the power grid for equipment, and the compressors we use are, as far as possible, electric.
Although that wasn’t fully possible in this project, we did use an electric air compressor for the surface work, allowing us to make better use of the generator once the decision was made to bring it in.
The result of the work was two containers that have undergone corrosion treatment, received a new entrance, and a new surface — ready for many more years of operation.
